Coconut: Controversial and … Cheap?

Yesterday and the day before I kept myself shuttered up inside with a hot mug of tea on the go at all times. Spring  you say? Not here. Inches and inches of fresh snow falling and 50 mph winds that reminded me of the Patagonia. Hmm, I think I will stay inside … and perhaps do a little online shopping? I deserve it, right?
So after dropping way too much money on the spring clothing sales yesterday (I’m really, really hoping those petite yoga pants fit!), I decided to end my …

The Most Interesting Thing I Ate Today …

To be clear, I don’t miss cheese, I don’t crave cheese, I don’t think about cheese … in fact, if it weren’t for Go Dairy Free, cheese wouldn’t even come onto my mental radar. But, in the name of trialing as many dairy substitutes as I can for the viewers, I give vegan cheese a go whenever I come across it and the ingredients don’t look too scary.
And once in a while, I like it. Not because it tastes like cheese (some of it kind of does, some of it …

Dairy-Free and Gluten-Free Dieters Don’t Get Enough Nutrients

Haven’t you heard?
A few months ago I was clicking my way from blog to blog, following tantalizing recipes, when I stumbled upon a post that changed my entire path. I don’t think the blogger had any idea how her “kind” recipe post would spur someone to action, but it did.
She was sharing a recipe for what she called “antioxidant” cupcakes, and the story that led to their creation. She was going to an office party where one of her coworkers was dairy-free and another was gluten-free. She noted that “free-from …

Peanut Butter Cocoa Smoothie and Berry-Licious Superfood Shake for Kids and Adults

I repeatedly get questions from moms and active adults who want to know how to fit healthy fats and protein into their diets and those of their loved ones when cutting out dairy. Many people rely on dairy products for certain nutrients and need a bit of a diet readjustment to slide the right foods into place.
My primary secret weapon: smoothies and shakes. Kid-friendly, adult-friendly, yumilicious, customizable to most diets (vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, sugar-free, you name it) and oh so easy – these thick (as I make them) blender beverages …

Food & Fitness Log: Snow, in Summer?

Okay, it certainly isn’t summer yet … but whenever the sun is shining brightly, daffodils are fighting to pop through, and fellow bloggers are starting to down popsicles and complain about the heat, all I can think about is summer. Yet mother nature insists on dumping inches upon inches of snow in town and upon our local mountains. (Then causing both my husband and I to think of that Bugs Bunny / Hiawatha cartoon where Hiawatha says with a lisp – “snow, in summer?”). Here is the forecast for the week ahead …

Honestly, I …

“Light” Roasting Veggies and Chopstick Challenge

I received some beautiful radishes in our CSA last week, but I must confess, I am not a huge fan of radishes. I put them in our salads and, meh. They were okay, but a little off. Though I do plan to do some experimenting with this veggie in its fresh state (I think the peppery taste might compliment some recipes nicely) I decided to take a chance and see what cooked radishes taste like.
If there is one magical cooking method that makes almost all veggies taste delicious, it is roasting. …
