My time away from Dairy-Free & Fit was much needed, as this past year I was dedicated to supporting a loved one through health issues and treatment. But now it’s time to focus on my health (and their increasing health), so my husband and I are taking a sugar break. And when I say sugar, that includes agave nectar, honey, maple syrup, sucanat, etc.
I’m not going to be uptight about it, but we are going to give it a go for ten days, to hopefully break the addiction that has taken …

I frequently receive the question, “Which milk alternative is healthiest?” This is a very loaded question, as it varies based on the range of interpretations of the term “healthy.”
Many dieticians claim soymilk is the only milk alternative that compares to milk nutritionally. Others feel that soy is an unhealthy and potentially GMO product that shouldn’t be consumed at all (perhaps soy is a good topic for another day!). Some rave of almond milk and feel virtuous in choosing it, while others point to its lower protein and fat and say …

I received this “Shrimpsgiving” sale alert from the wonderful PR people at Whole Foods this week, and wanted to share it with y’all. Whole Foods is a trek over a (now snowy) mountain for me, so I won’t make it there on Friday, but perhaps some of you can take advantage of this dealio …
Whole Foods Market has a holiday deal in the seafood department that is sure to make you the host with the most. On Friday, Nov. 12, our stores will be offering medium-sized (31/40), tail-on cooked shrimp …

There is no question that deception is deep-rooted in media and marketing. Yet, it never ceases to amaze me when another dishonest campaign emerges. Today on Go Dairy Free I addressed the latest hot topic from the New York Times on the USDA’s conflicting actions on cheese. Here is the basic dilemma:
USDA funds and supports massive anti-obesity campaign urging Americans to cut saturated fat.
USDA funds and assists Dairy Management in increasing American consumption of cheese – our top dietary source of saturated fat.
I’m not here to argue if fat, or saturated …

The face below may soon be sporting a coconut milk moustache as I reported today on Go Dairy Free.
I repeatedly receive concerns from fitness lovers and body builders that cutting out dairy will slash their potential gains, and somehow undermine their health. Rather than going into a long-winded article addressing this issue, I thought an example might hit home a little more efficiently. Though I can’t confirm if she is 100% dairy-free, a day in the food life of Jillian Michaels, as reported in an interview with Self magazine, would …

The day before BlogHer Food, I had the chance to enjoy the Ferry Building in San Francisco with some gluten-free friends, and pick up a few food necessities … after all, you can’t count on any event to be dairy-free. Wendy darted straight for the produce and proclaimed, “I love Honey Crisp Apples!” I love apples, but I’m not a connoisseur, so I took Wendy’s word and purchased a couple of the organic Honey Crisp Apples (for about $3 a lb – hey, I was on vacation!). They were tasty, but …

With over 150 entries for this giveaway … We have a winner! Molly Stevens! Congratulations Molly. She wrote: “I “liked” Living Harvest and would love a chance to win! I usually use rice or almond milk, but have enjoyed using hemp powder in my smoothies and would love to give the rest of the products a try :)”
Yes, I have been absent from this blog for a little while, and for good reason. Fortunately, I have kept up with my other online duties on Go Dairy Free and One Frugal Foodie, …

Last week I addressed the topic of healthy beverage alternatives to drinking cow’s milk. Milk alternatives, herbal tea, 100% juices, and of course, lots of good old-fashioned water topped the list, but sometimes, especially in summer, I do crave a little something special. We do our best to avoid soda pop and drinks loaded with sugar, but when on vacation or at the store after a long walk, my husband and I sometimes treat ourselves to one of these …

Oddly enough, I didn’t really like nuts as a kid, so I pretty much avoided them for most of my life. But, when I went strictly dairy-free I discovered their magical powers for creaminess, sweetness, and as a good protein / fat snack when things like string cheese were not on the munchy menu.
But have you noticed the nut butter explosion? Apparently I’m not the only one taking notice, because swarms of companies are emerging with various nut and seed butter blend. I’ve sampled a few, and all have their …

In my inbox today was an article from Team Beachbody entitled, “9 Foods Not to Give Your Kids.” Without even reading the article, I headed straight here to type.
Something deeply disturbed me at a restaurant recently. You know those very large thick plastic cups (maybe 32 oz?) that they serve bottomless pop in? (yes, I know, soda for California!) We watched the most obese child I have ever seen (probably about 7 or 8 years old) downing several of these, but that wasn’t the worst part. His little sister, who couldn’t have …
